Gum disease, which may be the most widespread oral condition we see, impacts about half of the total number of adults in the U.S. While a lot of what causes gum disease comes down to which food choices we make, there are also multiple risk factors you should be cognizant of. Here are some of them you can review.
The most obvious factor that will make you vulnerable for gum disease is poor dental hygiene. If you are not brushing your teeth two times a day and flossing at least one time per day (as well as coming into our office normally), the debris left in your oral cavity after you eat will erode and lead to gum disease. Ensure that you’re brushing regularly! If you smoke or chew tobacco, you will be at an advanced risk for gum disease. For many reasons, including higher-than-usual amounts of food intake, women having children are at an amplified risk for gum disease. Other risk factors for gum disease include diabetes and some types of medications which mitigate the amount of saliva formation.
